An award-winning photojournalist based in Athens, Greece, Nikos Pilos was born in Corfu in 1967 and is one of Europe’s noted feature photographers. He explores complex stories through intimate images and has traveled extensively to document war, natural disasters, poverty, socioeconomic struggle and cultural shifts. His work appears regularly in top international newspapers and magazines and has been exhibited throughout Europe.

Since his first assignment in Lebanon in 1988, he has covered major historical events such as the overthrow of Nicolae Ceausescu in Romania, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the wars in the former Yugoslavia and the war in Iraq, where he spent 100 days unembedded. Most recently, he documented the humanitarian crisis on the Libya-Tunisia border in 2011, where hundreds of thousands of refugees fled Libya during the war there.

His photos have been published by outlets including TIME, Newsweek, Stern, Der Spiegel, The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, The Sunday Times, The Washington Post, The Independent, El Semanal and Gente. He is a longtime contributor to the top Greek dailies Kathimerini, To Vima, and Eleftherotypia and to the newsweeklies K and Epsilon. Since 2010, he has worked as a contract photographer with Bloomberg. He’s currently represented by the agencies Sipa Press in France and Zuma Press in the United States and is a founding member of the Greek Photojournalists’ Association.

His awards include first place for photo editing in the 2007 National Press Photographers Association “Best of Photojournalism” competition for work in Doubletruck magazine, honorable  mention in the 2005 UNICEF Photo of the Year Competition for his coverage of the earthquake in Pakistan, and honorable mention in the Prix de la Photographie in Paris in 2010.
